FAQ
What types of students do you typically work with?
We specialize in supporting children, adolescents and young adults who have exceptional needs or simply need help navigating the increasing demands of school and life. This includes students with diagnosed learning differences like ADHD and dyslexia, as well as those who struggle with executive functioning skills—the underlying abilities needed for organization, planning, and time management. We also work with neurodiverse students who need support with social skills and self-advocacy. If your teen is bright but struggles to keep up with assignments, stay motivated, or connect with peers, they are likely a great fit for our programs.
How is your approach different from traditional tutoring?
Traditional tutoring typically focuses on a specific academic subject, like math or history. Our approach is holistic. We address the how of learning, not just the what. We equip students with crucial executive functioning and social-emotional skills that empower them in all of their classes and in life. We partner with our students to develop personalized strategies for planning long-term projects, managing their time, organizing their materials, and advocating for their needs in the classroom. We build the foundation for independent, confident learning.
My teenager is resistant to getting more "help." How do you handle that?
This is a very common and understandable concern. Our first priority is always to build rapport and trust directly with the student. We position ourselves as a coach and an ally, not another teacher or authority figure. The initial sessions focus on understanding their perspective, their goals, and their frustrations. By centering the process on what they want to achieve—whether it’s having more free time, feeling less stressed, or gaining independence—we help them see us as a resource for their success, leading to greater buy-in and motivation.
What is the process for getting started with NovaLux?
We make the process simple and collaborative. It starts with a complimentary, no-obligation discovery call with you (the parent or guardian) to discuss your child’s needs and your goals. From there, if it seems like a good fit, we’ll schedule an initial session with your teen to begin building a connection and assessing their strengths and challenges. Based on these conversations, we develop a customized coaching or support plan tailored to their unique needs.
Do you offer support for navigating school systems, like IEPs or 504 Plans?
Absolutely. We understand that advocating for your child within the school system can be overwhelming. Our team has extensive experience with the IEP (Individualized Education Program) and 504 Plan processes. We can provide advocacy support by helping you understand your child’s rights, preparing for school meetings, and working to ensure the proper accommodations and services are in place to support their learning.
Do you partner with schools or other organizations?
Yes. We are proud to partner with local schools and community organizations in Glendale and the surrounding areas to support their students. We offer a range of services including professional development workshops for educators on topics like supporting neurodiverse learners, as well as on-campus small group workshops for students focused on building executive functioning and social skills. Please reach out to us directly to discuss how we can create a partnership that meets your organization’s needs.
